WORKSAFEBC GUIDELINES: HANDLING ASBESTOS-CONTAINING MATERIAL (ACM)

When demolishing older structures, asbestos may be present and should only be handled by trained technicians. Before starting demolition, renovation, or salvage work, a qualified individual must inspect the site and identify hazardous materials, per WorkSafeBC guidelines (OHSRegulation Part 20.112(2)). Trained workers must remove and dispose of all friable ACMs beforehand. A notice of project (NOP) for asbestos removal, demolition, renovation, or salvage must be submitted to the Workers' Compensation Board at least 48 hours in advance. In the event of asbestos discovery during work, operations should halt immediately, and qualified professionals should remove the material before resuming.
